The secrets we keep, 2017

The secrets we keep (2017), is a 3 channel video work that recalls the confessional style synonymous with reality television shows, where people are encouraged to disclose their secrets publically. In my reworking of this television genre I have challenged this mode of disclosure by asking eight people personal questions; begging them to tell me a story about a significant event that has had an impact on their life. I have thwarted the confessional style of revealing by telling the participants that their confessions would be kept secret. This secrecy is created when the videos audio function is subverted and the work delivers the subject’s in silence. This forces the audience to lip read what these people are confessing to me implicating them in their own voyeuristic urge to know the secrets of the other.
