Bodies, 2017

Bodies, (2017) is a series of paired photographs portraying images of the female body alongside details of the surfaces of water. This pairing brings together two ordinarily disparate subjects – the landscape and the human body.

In this work, ‘bodies’ of water are pictured as surfaces, in close-up detail, in a portrait format. These are paired alongside portraits of the female body. With their backs to us, the bodies of three women are portrayed from behind, giving little information of the subject’s identity. Their backs, like the water, offer another surface to read. One is forced to read their freckles, hair length and the variations of their skin. Likewise, one is forced to read the surface of the water, with its waves, swell, bubbles and allusion to a subterranean depth. These readings potentially lend the bodies of water different personalities and the same complexity as the human portrait.
