Passing Through is a two-channel video work that acts as a self-portrait. In this self-portrait I have explored my Chinese identity and the experience of being displaced in Australia. Shot in both Dixon street in Sydney’s Chinatown and in a traditional street in Chengdu in China, the work places me in both my homeland and in the echo of my homeland. Passing Through acts as a memorial to my time in Sydney and is undertaken at the threshold my imminent departure. As an international student I have been in Sydney for seven years. I have used this work to record how I have inhabited two places at once in Australia and China.
